The Best Games of the Decade So Far That You’ll Definitely Want to Play

Although the 2020s are still in their infancy, the gaming industry has already delivered some truly exceptional titles, and we've only just begun to explore the potential of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. As developers become more attuned to these console systems, they're stretching their capabilities, and producing some unforgettable gaming experiences. Simultaneously, there is speculation that the Nintendo Switch is approaching the end of its tenure, and many gamers anticipate that it might go out with a bang.

Numerous spectacular games are yet to grace this decade, but let's celebrate the best titles that have emerged in the 2020s thus far.

Baldur's Gate 3

Joining the gaming arena in early access in 2020, the actual launch of Baldur's Gate 3 by Larian Studios in 2023 was highly anticipated. Fans knew the game would be a hit, and developers didn't disappoint. They introduced a tactical, turn-based battle system similar to Larian's Divinity: Original Sin 2, which requires strategic thinking and planning. The complexity and unpredictability of Baldur's Gate 3 can be daunting for newcomers to tactical RPGs, but once mastered, it is undeniably rewarding.

Final Fantasy 16

Square Enix has progressively evolved the Final Fantasy series over the last decade, shifting from traditional turn-based combat to real-time interaction. As of Final Fantasy 16, they've pared down RPG mechanics to a single playable character and have done away with the standard party system. Traditionally loyal gamers have different opinions about this evolution, but it's hard to deny how captivating Final Fantasy 16 is as a standalone game.

The game contributes a mature and intense story that dramatically leads up to a fantastic final act, all wrapped up with the exquisite cinematics that Square Enix is renowned for. Despite a deceptively low difficulty level during the first playthrough, the combo-driven combat system reveals remarkable depth upon further exploration.

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, was celebrated as one of the best games of the previous decade. Its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, has honored that distinction with another successful run in this decade. The game expands upon the previous installment's foundations, providing an adventure packed with discovery, action, and intuitive crafting. Zelda is lost to an underground investigation, creating pandemonium in Hyrule and initiating another epic journey for Link.

While the gameplay is reminiscent of BOTW, TOTK introduces innovative additions and mechanics that significantly modify the overall experience. In this sequel, Link has the ability to combine items, a concept that plays a pivotal role throughout the campaign. Despite the limitations of its console, TOTK remains a modern, audacious, and innovative game.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

It's fair to admit that the initial release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor had some flaws, particularly on PC. EA and Respawn Entertainment issued several patches that have substantially improved the game since its release. Despite being plagued by optimization issues, underneath it all, is an enjoyable game that not only lives up to its predecessor but also respects the Star Wars franchise. While the combat system is similar to Fallen Order, Survivor's worlds, platforming, exploration, and story are arguably improved aspects.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake

The horror genre saw two notable remakes in 2023: Dead Space and Resident Evil 4. Both are respectful tributes to their original versions and successfully live up to their legendary statuses. However, Resident Evil 4 slightly outperforms Dead Space (a sentiment that might be countered by diehard sci-fi enthusiasts).

The remake sees the character, Leon, navigating a creepy European village and castle in his quest to find Ashley Graham, the missing daughter of the US President. The journey is nostalgic yet refreshing, offering more than just a modern graphical overhaul. This remake has modified the original campaign subtly and boldly, resulting in a remarkable remake that proudly stands beside its original version.
